Clean Sleeping Trend As Seen on ABC 7 Chicago

Is “clean eating” not working for you in 2017? Well, hop on the trend bandwagon and try “clean sleeping”! Health & Fitness Expert Stephanie Mansour breaks down the “clean sleeping” trend started by celebrity Gwyneth Paltrow and gives us tips on how we can sleep drug-free!

But first, we have a new health and wellness TV show called Step It Up with Steph on PBS Chicago that is airing every Saturday on WTTW at 10am! The first episode, on January 21st, is all about insomnia…so this clean sleeping trend really fits in today! The Launch Party for the show was last night, Friday, at Hubbard Inn in River North, and they provided us with a beautiful venue and helped us host a wonderful event.

Back to clean sleeping! Sleeping is really important because it affects all parts of your life, and can contribute to diseases such as obesity.

Here’s tips for how you can do it:

1. Use deodorant at night to make sure you smell good. You can feel good about your deodorant choice with PiperWai’s all natural deodorant made with activated charcoal that neutralizes odors naturally.

2. Write it all out. Let go of the day’s troubles by journaling and letting go of things so that your mind isn’t racing when you get into bed. Before you’re in your bedroom, write down all your lists and thoughts for the day and then keep the journal in a closed drawer or somewhere away from you.

3. Then, lighten the mood…with candles. Your brain and your eyes will get adjusted to seeing in the dark and your brain will be signaled that it is time for bed, and time for your body to produce melatonin, which will help you fall asleep. This is especially important if you watch TV in bed or if you are on your phone in your bed and have a bright light in front of your eyes. Instead of taking a melatonin supplement or a sleeping aid, try this to help your body out.

4. Avoid late night snacking. If you must, eat chickpeas! Chickpeas have lots of Vitamin B-6 which helps produce melatonin. Wild Garden has convenient single serve packs of hummus and crackers that will help you feel more tired. Whole grains are another thing that will help you wind down.

5. Are you a chip eater like me? Replace junk food with something healthier. The Daily Crave has great veggie and lentil chips that go great with the humus and are a healthy option for a late night snack.

6. WINE-d down, but without the wine. Alcohol interferes with a good night’s sleep. If you must, trick yourself into drinking sparkling water in a wine glass, and enjoy that!

7. Get in the right state of mind. You DESERVE to end the day on a good note. Try the 30 Day Workbook I created to help you feel better about yourself and boost your self-confidence. It’s a great way to feel good at the end of night.

5 Common Workout Mistakes and How to Fix Them As Seen on Fox Chicago

Did you set your New Year’s Resolution to something along the lines of working out harder, faster, or just more often? Well, our Health & Fitness Expert Stephanie Mansour is here the 5 common workout mistakes, and how to fix them to avoid an injury!

Here are the most common mistakes that people make at home and at the gym:

1. Resting – Too many water breaks or too many breaks at the gym saying hi to friends. Drink water before you start working out or on your way to the gym so that you’re not dehydrated during your workout. Instead, add in bursts of cardio, or hold strength training, to break up your workout.

2. Too much cardio – Do strength training moves in between cardio bursts to keep your heart rate up and your body working. This is a great way to add in a break to your cardio.

3. Too long of workouts – Don’t waste your entire day at the gym when you can instead be working much harder for only 30 minutes. Then, you’ll have more time to tackle your other daily activities and not feel like working out is a burden and too time-consuming. My Signature Slimdown Workout DVD has a full body 30 minute workout that you can do right at home and not have to make an extra trip to the gym!

4. Sabotaging yourself at the gym – No music or too slow of music slows YOU down! Research shows that having faster, and more upbeat music will increase your body’s stamina and help you work out longer. If you’re self-conscious that you smell while you’re at the gym, you’re breaking your motivation and causing your mind to be distracted. My new favorite deodorant, from PiperWai, is great because it absorbs wetness and is stain-free! Their all natural ingredients include activated charcoal which absorbs moisture and doesn’t plug your sweat glands.

5. Doing common exercises WRONG – For lunges, it’s important that your knee doesn’t go past your ankle. Remember to pull your abs in and use the strength in your core. When doing bicep curls, make sure you keep your elbows tucked in to your waist and then curl your arms up to your shoulders. For an overhead press, do NOT arch your back backwards. Keep it straight and pull your abs in while pressing your arms up and above your head.

Reality Check Your New Year’s Resolution As Seen on WNEM TV 5

Already looking ahead to your New Year’s Resolution? If you’re like many people, weight loss may be on your mind. We’re covering realistic ways to set your health goals in today’s Step It Up with Steph!

Sometimes our New Year’s goals can be big and exuberant, but we can’t really check on them to make sure we are on track and setting ourselves up for success.

Set your workout times so that they’re realistic for you. If you’re intimidated by a 30 or 60 minute workout, or realistically don’t think you can fit it in your schedule each week, don’t make it your first goal. For example, my workout DVD has 5 minute workouts! This is a big stretch for some people, BUT it is a starting point from which you will grow. Planning on your 5 minutes workout is realistic and something you can feel proud of. Setting your mind up for success is another important aspect of being able to stick to your New Year’s resolutions.

Grocery shop at the beginning of the week and plan your meals in advance! Sitting down for 5 minutes before you head out to the grocery store will help you plan your meals, and also will help you stay on track when you’re at the grocery store. It’s easy when you’re grocery shopping to get off track when you see one tempting item.

Reward yourself with something healthy when you’re proud of yourself for staying on track with your workouts, eating plans, and relaxing. You could buy yourself flowers or a new book that you’ve been wanting to read.

Finally, make other people support you in your goal. Shout it from the rooftops! Encouragement and being vocal about your goals helps to keep you on track!

How to Make Your Workouts More Fun As Seen on WNEM TV 5

Getting bored of the same old workout routine? Well we’re here to help you get out of a workout rut on today’s Step It Up with Steph!

I’ve got some easy ways that you can spice things up in your workout.

First, change up your workout! Even though it’s so cold outside, something that I enjoy doing is swimming. You can go to your local gym or anywhere that has an indoor pool. You don’t have to swim fast, or for a long time, but it’s important to change up your workout. You can step it up by listening to music while swimming, too! I was surprised to find out that there are actually underwater music players. Finis Duo is a great MP3 to use while swimming because it has the highest quality sound in the water and syncs with your iTunes music library, too! Music is key to getting you more motivated, and research has proven that listening to upbeat songs encourages you to work out harder and longer.

Speaking of music, change your playlist up and add new songs, or old classic ones that you haven’t listened to in a while! This will get your brain’s attention while you’re working out and keep you focused and in the game! You may be getting bored of your playlist and therefore lagging off on your workout – without even noticing it!

Finally, bring a family member with you or a friend and try out some new equipment or workouts. You can even bring your kid! Change up who you’re working out with so that it’s more of an activity rather than a regular old workout. Look for a yoga in the park session or a new gym to try out free for a week!

Avoid Getting Sick While Staying Fit As Seen on WNEM TV 5

If you’re prone to getting sick in the winter, we’ve got some basic layering tips for your wardrobe that’ll help you keep warm and healthy in today’s Step It Up with Steph!

Do you ever think about starting with your undergarments to stay warm? For example, instead of wearing multiple socks (I’ve done this before!) try wearing wool socks. Wool socks can be a little of an investment, but they are well worth it!

And for ladies, when you’re getting dressed to work out, find a sports bra that’s got full coverage and support. It starts from that bottom layer! A soft, comfortable, and properly-fitted bra will keep you warm underneath. Handful bras are great for this. They can be worn for working out, or just everyday!

Add on a couple layers of workout tops and pants, and then don’t forget your jacket! If you’re on a budget, and in dire need of a new winter jacket, I’ve got something to share with you. Burlington is in the midst of its 10th Annual Warm Coats and Warm Hearts Coat Drive initiative, going on now! Shoppers can donate gently-worn coats to help those in need during the winter, and will receive 10% off their purchase through January 23rd, 2017. Any type of coat during the cold months help to keep you warm! Burlington is known for having items that are 65% off retailer’s price, so this is great when you need to buy for the whole family!

Holiday Detox As Seen on WNEM TV 5

If you’re feeling weighed down from a big family gathering or a holiday party, we’ve got some easy ways that you can detox on today’s Step It Up with Steph!

First, no matter what type of detox you’re doing, it’s important to stay hydrated! I tell my clients to “Chug, Chug, Chug.”

I love this big bottle of Eternal water because I can track how much I’m drinking throughout the day. Drinking water is key, especially if you’re also drinking caffeine throughout the day.

Another way to detox is by drinking coconut water. Coconut water helps with fatigued muscles and has a unique flavor. My favorite is Harmless Harvest coconut water.

Remember to read the ingredients on the items that you’re looking into buying for a detox.

Do you ever eat salads and feel bloated? It could be because raw vegetables are more difficult for your body to digest. Therefore, try cooked vegetables paired with lean protein, like fish, chicken, or beans.
