5 Questions to Ask When You Aren’t Getting Results at the Gym (As Seen On NBC News Better)

As a fitness coach in Chicago, one of the questions I get asked the most by my personal weight loss clients is when to look at your workouts and know it’s time to change them. Since a workout is so personal and unique to every individual, I always recommend clients to answer these 5 questions!

1. Am I bored?

If you’re finding yourself bored with your workouts, it may be time for you to switch them up! The American Council on Exercise says that when you vary your workout, you actually are avoiding any plateaus you may be reaching. This leads to more results in less time!

2. Am I inconsistent?

Life gets in the way of your workouts sometimes, and that’s okay! It can become a problem, however, if you start to notice patterns. Do you always want to skip workouts during the week? If so, try doing a 30 minute workout for two days a week! If you struggle with staying active on the weekends, try meeting up with a friend for a walk around your city.

3. Am I seeing results?

When it comes to workouts, we all want to see results. It is very important that you make sure you aren’t looking to the scale to measure these results! It’s healthy to lose about one to two pounds per week. If you’re losing more than this, it might be coming from an unsustainable exercise or eating habit which can lead to gaining the weight back.

4. Am I getting injured?

A workout is supposed to help strengthen your body, not harm it. It is essential to listen to your body and adjust accordingly. If you feel that a certain exercise is contributing to an injury, try reducing the number of reps and using less weight!

5. Do I dread my workouts?

If you consistently dread workouts, it may be time to switch up your workout routine. One trick I always recommend to my private weight loss clients is to focus on how great they are going to feel after the workout is completed. A little mindset shift can do the trick!
