The Best Holiday Season Fitness Hacks To Stay Healthy (As Seen on ABC 7 Chicago)

When many people think of the Holiday Season, their mind automatically jumps to annual Christmas parties and other festivities. While these festivities are always a highlight of the season, they may leave you feeling like you need to put your fitness goals to the side.

One of the ways I encourage my private weight loss clients to not feel as if they aren’t reaching their weight loss goals is to cut their fitness goals in half. The holiday season is a busy one, and if you are too hard on yourself you may want to throw in the towel or completely forget about your fitness progress. If you keep smaller more manageable goals that you’re more likely to reach you’ll end up boosting your morale and potentially overachieving your goals!

Another way I’m able to encourage my clients to stay on track is to have them add plant-based probiotic drinks into their diets. One of my personal favorites is the new Plantiful probiotic drink from Lifeway Foods. Plentiful is a pea protein, which is a great way to incorporate vegan foods into your diet.  Lifeway Foods is known for their kefir, but this new allergen-friendly alternative to nut milks is a drink you’ll love. It has 10 grams of plant-based protein per serving and is perfect for post-workout. It also has 10 live and active probiotic cultures which is twice the amount found in most yogurts.

Plantiful is available at Fresh Thyme and Pete’s Fresh Market stores in Chicagoland. You can also get it as a soft serve frozen treat or in a smoothie at any Lifeway Kefir Shop location in Chicago.

How To Cure a Hangover (As Seen on The Jam)

Having a cocktail or a glass of champagne to celebrate a big event is wonderful. Until you have one too many and risk hurting the next day. Don’t let a hangover cramp your style any longer, Health and Fitness Expert and Women’s Weight Loss Coach Stephanie Mansour visits The Jam to give you these five hangover helpers. Get off the couch and back into action with her pro tips.

Knock, Knock

Who’s there? Banana. Banana who? Banana smoothie! We’ve heard that coconut water is great for the morning after drinking, but what if you don’t keep that on hand? Reach for a banana instead. You can eat it plain, or blend it into a delicious fruit smoothie. Either way you’ll be boosting your levels of potassium and magnesium, both of which may be depleted after your night on the town!

Your Body Likes to Move It, Move It

Before you start groaning, I’m not telling you to exercise…this time! This one is about your body’s digestion. Help the junk move out of your system quicker by upping your fiber intake. Charcoal is touted as a beneficial supplement for detoxing after indulging in a few too many drinks. Many of us won’t have that readily at hand though.

Instead, go check out your fridge contents. Grab that head of broccoli and chop it up for a lunchtime salad (maybe with some protein-rich eggs too—yum!) or sauté it up for dinner. Other fibrous veggies include: carrots, beets, artichokes, and Brussels sprouts.

That being said, if you have time to sneak in a quick workout, a little movement can also ease your hangover symptoms. Check out my Step It Up with Steph DVD for at convenient at-home workouts.

Cup of Coffee > Hair of the Dog

You may think that bloody Mary is the answer to your woes, but it isn’t actually curing you—you’re actually setting your recovery time back further if you keep drinking. Grab your regular cup of coffee, the caffeine will shrink the capillaries in your head giving you some relief from that pounding headache!

One caveat here is that you may already be dehydrated and coffee could dehydrate you further. Be sure to drink plenty of water. I always tell my private weight loss clients to drink a glass as soon as you wake up and another one with your coffee, etc.

Goodbye Grease

A lot of people swear by a greasy breakfast as their go-to hangover food. This is counter-intuitive as it will lead to your guts being even more messed up! Skip the greasy hash browns and fatty bacon and opt for some quality protein in the form of hard-boiled eggs. Enjoy with whole grain toast to settle that stomach and stabilize your blood sugar levels. Leaving you energized as opposed to nauseated and fatigued.

Banish Inflammation

If you’re still really struggling with that headache, go ahead and pop some ibuprofen for faster relief. Advil or Aleve are both NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) that will go to work on easing that pain in your head. Don’t exceed recommended dose and take with plenty of water.

Moderation in all things is best, especially drinking. But if you get in a tight spot—say after a big sports game or celebrating a birthday or promotion—I hope these tips help you out!

xoxo

How Women’s Studies Research Inspired Me to Become a Weight Loss Coach

Chicago weight loss coach Stephanie Mansour sat down with Karen Rhodes and Jonathan Freeburg at WCMY AM Radio to discuss why she strives to share positive messaging about women’s health, wellness, and weight loss in the media.

WCMY Radio Interview

When I was an undergrad at the University of Michigan, I studied communication with an emphasis in women’s studies and psychology. While analyzing how women’s health was depicted in the media, I came across a great deal of negative messaging about body image and weight.

While this was not surprising, when I really dug into the data and uncovered how powerful this messaging was, it inspired me to want to create more empowering messages for women about health and wellness.

It was during this time that I also began having my own struggles with weight and body image. But dieting worked against me. It wasn’t until I learned to accept myself that I was able to overcome emotional eating, drop the excess pounds that were weighing me down, and improve my overall health and fitness.

Much of the messaging we see about weight loss in the media is based on body shaming, restriction, deprivation, and negativity. As a weight loss coach, I work with the clients in my weight loss programs for women to help them embrace their bodies as they are and boost their self-confidence right now. The aim is to help them love and respect themselves enough to make healthier choices and feel empowered to reach their goals.

I also strive to share positive messaging about health, wellness, and weight loss in the media. I recently sat down with Karen Rhodes and Jonathan Freeburg at WCMY AM Radio to discuss…

  • how to end emotional eating
  • the importance of positive self-talk
  • the #1 mistake people make when they “go on a diet”
  • and more…

You can listen to the interview here.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to lose weight, but it is never okay to beat yourself up because you are not the size you want to be. Rather than put yourself down for eating a cookie, for example, I want you to lift yourself up for doing what’s best for your health.

Quick Fixes for Summer Health Issues as Featured on Today.com

Chicago weight loss and health coach, Stephanie Mansour, shares advice from top health experts on how to fix common summer health issues in an article for Today.com

Almost everyone loves something about summertime — sunnier days, family vacations, or lazy Saturday afternoons. But with hotter temperatures in Chicago and across the nation, we should all be on alert about summer health issues and what to do about them.

As a weight loss coach for women, I focus on helping my clients get into a fat-burning zone and avoid being sabotaged by environmental factors. However, as the temperatures heat up each year, a new set of challenges arise.

In a recent article for The Today Show, I tapped top health experts to give us the lowdown on how to stay cool this summer and how to address our summer health challenges, such as:

  • what to do if you’re constipated on summer vacation,
  • how to get better sleep on hot summer nights,
  • why you’re always thirsty in the summer and what to do about it,
  • how to treat summer exercise injuries,
  • ways to be healthier while traveling,
  • and more…

When working with my private weight loss coaching clients, I often address challenges that could be interfering with their ability to feel their best and reach their goals. A few issues that come up frequently include sleep, staying hydrated, and handling food cravings with a busy social calendar or while traveling during the summer.

My Chicago-area weight loss clients are always on the go and like to enjoy food and drinks! But it’s important to keep cravings in check, and this is something that we do with the help of a Dr. of Naturopathy in Chicago who consults with clients in our weight loss programs.

Check out the article to read advice from experts such as Dr. Lynn M. O’Connor, Dr. Robert Glatter, Dr. Ali Sadrieh, nutritionist Beth Nydick, Dr. Christopher S. Colwell, and Dr. Ralph E. Holsworth for more ways you can quickly address summer health problems!
