For many women with busy schedules, their time in the bathroom can be some of the most relaxing times they have all day. Warm showers and getting ready can certainly create a feeling of zen in your own home, but did you know you can also use your bathroom for a workout space? The Best At-Home Workouts For Your Living Room (As Seen In The Chicago Sun Times)

With orders to only leave your home if you’re an essential employee or to get essential items due to COVID-19, you may find your schedule turned upside down. If you’re being forced to adjust to staying at home all day, you’re not alone. It’s quite a lifestyle change, which is why I came up with a few workouts you can do from home to make up for not hitting the gym!

A 5-Minute Pilates Workout To Do From Your Couch (As Seen On The Today Show Online)

With social distancing and working remotely becoming the new norm for millions of women, it’s important to find effective at-home workouts. One of my favorite at-home workouts to recommend for my private weight loss clients is a 5-minute routine to help work the legs and glutes. This workout is fantastic for women at home and doesn’t require any equipment!

Being a certified Pilates instructor I have found that doing a workout on a couch can be even more difficult than doing a workout on a flat surface! Your body may sink into the couch a little, making it that much harder to maintain your form. As a bonus, your couch may be in front of a TV which you can watch while you workout. If you aren’t into watching TV while working out you can also do this with a Podcast or even while you listen in to a conference call!

While there is no real recipe or definitive way to stay positive, shifting your mindset can have many benefits for your health. One of the ways I’ve been encouraging my private weight loss clients to stay positive and motivated in regards to their fitness is to incorporate little things to improve their wellness into their day. If you’ve already done your 5-minute workout, you’re less likely to eat junk food and counteract what you did in your workout. You’re also more likely to do another 5-minute workout before you go to bed!

Another important mindset I’ve shared with my clients is that even one 5-minute workout is 500% more of a workout than sitting on the couch. It’s important to be kind to yourself! Social distancing and working remotely due to COVID-19 is uncharted territory, being kind to yourself is essential. With the drastic change in everyone’s schedule and move toward online schooling for kids, it’s important to add fun activity into their schedule. Getting kids up and excited about moving during this break from school can help keep them in shape for when their favorite sports return or even help prepare them to start to play a sport. One miscommunication about exercise many adults and children have is that exercise can’t be fun. This is far from the truth! Finding exercises that your children (and you!) enjoy is a great way to ensure you’ll both get the exercise you need.

While working from your couch or bed you may be extremely comfy, it may lead to adverse impacts on your posture. Most office chairs are designed to help improve your posture with features encouraging you to sit up straight and keep your feet flat on the floor. Your bed or couch, on the other hand, may not.

How you’re sitting when you’re working on a laptop may not seem like it would be a big deal, but it can really take a toll on your posture. While laying down while working may seem fun and exciting at first since you can’t do it at a traditional office, you’ll start to quickly notice neck and back pain. When working out in the home, one of the best (and most surprising!) areas is the bedroom. Beds can make fantastic makeshift yoga mats because of how soft they are. They are also fantastic options for people who feel that sitting on the floor is too hard on their joints and bones.

One of the best exercises to do while you’re on the bed is a great stretch routine. These workouts are fast, simple, and will help you exercise while not even breaking a sweat! (That’s right – you can do this workout in your pajamas…)

When you’re in the office, you’re likely sitting at desks specifically designed to help you have good posture. The same goes for your desk chairs – many of them have posture support in mind when they were created. If you’re going to start working from your kitchen chair or even your couch these areas may not offer your body the same levels of support. 

Taking measures to do workouts that can help to correct bad posture and strengthen your abs can help to tone your midsection as well as help with back and neck pain. Working out at home can be very convenient if you’ve got the proper home gym equipment. If you’re used to working out in a traditional gym, you may not have the basic home gym items many home workouts require. Luckily, you may have home essentials that can double as workout equipment! 

To do a basic arm workout you need dumbbells. If you don’t have dumbbells, you can substitute them for a gallon of milk, laundry detergent, or even jugs of water. It’s recommended to use items that weigh between 3 to 8 pounds, even if you’re using traditional dumbbells.

Getting a workout in even when you can’t leave your home is essential. Exercise helps to keep your immune system up, so skipping a workout isn’t the best idea with the Coronavirus going around. Home gyms have been on the rise lately, especially with the popularity of equipment such as the Peloton. What many women don’t realize, however, is that you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on home gym equipment!
