5 Ways to Boost Your Immune System Holistically (As Seen On Fox 32 Chicago)

Women’s Weight Loss Coach and Fitness Expert Stephanie Mansour was featured on Fox 32  in Chicago to discuss holistic remedies for the upcoming cold and flu season. These are five simple things you can easily add into your existing daily routine to keep your health at a maximum.

I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that every time colder weather rolls around, people start falling sick with the same bug. Whether you opt to get the flu shot or not, these natural remedies can help you fight inflammation in your body and they come with zero health risks.

Let’s start bright and early.

Are you an avid coffee or tea drinker in the morning? You don’t have to ditch your beverage of choice, but try getting in the habit of having a cup of hot water and lemon first thing in the morning. You can boil the water in the microwave if you’re short on time. Squeeze the juice from half a lemon in there, sip, and you’re good to go! The reason is twofold; lemon is very detoxifying and it’s going to help reduce inflammation.

Or, maybe you’re more of a morning smoothie drinker. If that’s the case, try adding one to two cups spinach to get the same anti-inflammatory benefits plus that boost of Vitamin C.

That Dreaded Midday Crash

Do you find yourself reaching for more coffee in the afternoons to keep yourself going? Let me introduce you to a better option, Bru Broth. Bru Broth is the freshest bone broth on the market and contains just the right amount of protein to wake you up out of that afternoon slump! It’s loaded with collagen which is great for your skin, and it’s amazing for your overall gut health.

They come in easy-to-pack, portable bottles, are available in a variety of fun flavors, and they’re 100% organic! Win, win, win! They also sell a line called RESET for anyone interested in doing a bone broth cleanse. Unlike most juice cleanses that can be pretty high in sugars, the Bru Broth cleanse boasts less than one gram of sugar per serving.

The Evening Meal

Dinner is the perfect time to play up the spices. Depending on your spice tolerance consider adding one of the following to your nightly stir-fry or soup: turmeric, ginger, garlic, or even some cayenne pepper.

What we’re looking for here is just enough spice to speed up your metabolism and keep that digestive system running smoothly. Gut health is essential, especially when trying to fight off or avoid the flu.

No Days off, Right?

Wrong. Like I always tell my private weight loss clients, it is absolutely okay to stop your workouts if you feel yourself getting sick. If your body is aching, kick back and treat yourself to some self-massage. You can use a foot roller, or roll out on a foam roller if you have one handy. Go easy on yourself.

Get That Healing Sleep

Right after fluids, “get some rest” is the top prescribed remedy for fighting off sickness. Motivate yourself to go to bed earlier with a cushy sleep mask and/or an aromatherapy ball. If you know a lush sleeping set-up is waiting for you, you’ll be more apt to hustle under those covers!

Clear Signs Not to Push Through Workout Pain (As Seen on Good Day Chicago)

Steph shares with Good Day Chicago five clear signs that you’ve pushed your body too far in a workout. Working out can be hard, but it should never be painful. Get these great fitness tips and step up your health today.

My private weight loss clients are notorious for their “no pain no gain” mentality as are most people when they start a fitness routine or weight loss program. My clients are high powered and successful women who are great at getting the job done and making things happen. But when they take that attitude to the gym, it’s a recipe for disaster. No pain, no gain is old school. Step up your fitness mindset with an integrative and holistic approach.

It’s possible to have an effective workout without leaving the gym super sweaty and sore. Don’t go hard to get results. It’s all about working out smarter, not harder.

Clear Signs Not to Push Through Workout Pain

1. You feel an immediate twinge of pain during a workout.

If something comes on suddenly and is accompanied by pain, then it’s time to stop your work out.

2. You hear a pop or a crack and it is followed by pain.

Sure we all get a little crackly and poppy as we age, but if you hear a weird pop or crack and it is followed by pain take that as a sign it’s time to stop working out. You might need to take a few days off even to make sure you fully heal and recuperate.

3. Pain gets worse as you work out.

Sometimes we hurt ourselves and aren’t sure if it’s “real” pain or just muscle fatigue and normal soreness. It can seem like a good idea to work the muscles, warm them up and loosen things up; however, if the pain continues to worsen while working out–stop! That’s a sign you’ve pushed your body too far and need to scale back.

Cheers to Healthy Drinking This Summer (As Seen on CBS Chicago)

Health and Wellness Expert Stephanie Mansour dropped by CBS Chicago to discuss low cal, low sugar beverages. Learn how to enjoy a delicious summer full of fresh cocktails and weight loss!

As a private weight loss coach, I am always telling my clients that knowledge is power.

Many of my clients are ready and raring to go to lose weight, but they always fear that I’m going to tell them to give up alcohol completely. But that’s not the case! I want you to pay attention to how alcohol makes you feel. Waking up sluggish and hungover? Could be it’s from the sugar—not the alcohol. Start by learning how alcohol meshes with your body and go from there.

So think about great alternatives for home cocktails, like this Batiste Rhum. It’s low in sugar and tastes amazing! Be a conscious consumer and pay attention to what’s in your alcohol.

A Day in the Life
Let’s take a look at healthy and tasty alternatives to the classic beverages we like to enjoy while out to brunch with friends, celebrating on game day, or mingling with co-workers at a happy hour event.

Time for Brunch

My private weight loss clients are successful women, many are executives, but even they like to have fun! A couple mimosas or Bellini’s at brunch aren’t bad, right? Think again. There is a lot of added sugar in that peach puree and in the juice used to mix these morning cocktails. Ask for a glass of straight prosecco and a side of fresh fruit instead. You can garnish your drink yourself and enjoy fewer calories while still getting a happy buzz!

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Light beer might have fewer calories, but you still get the uncomfortable bloat! Try a Gluten Free beer or a cider instead, like Angry Orchard. Just be sure to check the labels on cider, some have a higher sugar content than others.

Happy Hour for the Win

Skip the soda as a mixer! Ask for your favorite liquor of choice mixed with sparkling water, a squeeze of lemon and lime, and some herbs—like mint! By avoiding soda and mixers like triple sec, you save yourself calories and won’t wake up with a sugar hangover in the morning. Keep your drinks fresh, fresh, fresh and you can’t go wrong!

The Best Fitness Gifts for Father’s Day 2018 (As Seen on ABC Chicago)

Looking for the best fitness gifts for Father’s Day? If you’re shopping for Father’s Day fitness gifts, look no further! As a Health and Fitness expert and Weight Loss Coach, I stopped by ABC Chicago to show you my favorite workout and gym gifts for men!

1. Sneaky Gift to Get Dad Fit this Father’s Day

If you’re trying to nudge Dad in a healthy direction, my favorite fitness gift is a gift certificate for a personal training session, a Pilates session, or a Yoga session.

Personal training is great for someone who wants to or needs to lose weight, or just needs to get back in the gym. If your dad has low back pain or needs to strengthen his core, Pilates will help with that. If he struggles with really tight muscles and needs to become more flexible, a Yoga session is the ticket.

Here’s a trick–don’t just purchase the session, also schedule it! Put it on your dad’s calendar so he will automatically feel more invested in going since he’ll have to call to reschedule or cancel if need be.

2.  Fitness Trackers, Speakers, and Music for Dad

I love this Fender Newport Bluetooth Speaker because it looks so sharp and it’s something that dad will love! The retro look combined with the functionality is a great gift for Father’s Day.

If your dad goes to the gym or loves to run, he’ll also love these Jaybird wireless headphones. Wireless headphones are all the rage!

Let’s not forget fitness trackers. But don’t buy just any old fitness tracker. Check out these beautiful and professional looking watches by Fossil. They even help track sleep! They’re hybrid smartwatches and can sync with your dad’s phone!

3. Look the Part: The Gear Dad Needs

If dad loves lifting weights, this Kettle Gryp is super cool. All you have to do is put a dumbbell of any weight amount into the contraption, and you’re ready to exercise.

I encourage my private weight loss clients to lift weights that feel comfortable for them, starting with 10 repetitions per exercise. To help with pain management and pain relief, check out this kit from Gaiam that includes a foam roller, body roller, and a ball to roll your feet with at your desk at work or even on the couch!

Tervis makes great insulated water bottles, and if your dad is a baseball fan, I love the Chicago Cubs version!

My mom always says, “If you don’t know what to get dad, you can’t go wrong with socks and underwear!” That’s why I love these 2(X)ist athletic socks because they’re super soft and have a little zipper pouch to put your key or money in. A lot of my private weight loss clients don’t like lugging a bunch of stuff to the gym, and your dad probably isn’t into carrying a man bag. So this is a simple way to only bring the essentials.

Moisture control undies to wear underneath workout shorts are also a great Father’s Day gift option as well.

4. Men’s Organic Grooming

I often talk about women taking holistic approachs to health from all angles, including beauty products. But this is really becoming a trend for men’s grooming products, too.

If dad shaves quite often, check out this Kopari coconut melt that is the ultimate shave oil and 100% organic!

Oars & Alps also makes moisturizers and products that help with puffy eyes and dark circles!

Finally, Shea Terra Organics creates moisturizing oils that are gender-neutral. These are all things that a man may not buy for himself, but as a health-conscious woman they would be great gifts to give to a guy.

Finally, if you’re looking to get someone healthier without hitting them over the head with it, try modeling healthy behavior! Specifically for women I’ve created private weight loss programs and free weight loss challenges. As a private weight loss coach for women, I’ve helped my clients speak up to family members and their spouses and actually influence them to become healthier, too. So, it’s a win-win!
