Five Minute Yoga For Better Posture (As Seen on Good Morning America)

Doing exercises to improve your posture are some of the best exercises you can do for yourself. Luckily, some of these yoga sequences can be done in five minutes or less.

Improving your posture doesn’t just lead to you being able to move around and perform day to day tasks better, it leads to you being able to relieve some of your back pain and neck tension. These tensions build up and can leave you feeling sore, but there are yoga poses that you can do to help relieve this tension. Many of my private weight loss clients have complained of neck and back pain relating to staring down at technology all day. When they mention this, I always recommend yoga sequences like these to help them relieve this tension.

August is one of the most hectic times of the year. You’re working to get your family back into a routine which can lead to even more stress being placed on yourself. Even when your to-do list is piling up, it’s important to take a few minutes for yourself and unwind. Yoga is a perfect way to decrease your stress levels as well as squeeze in a little exercise. Yoga is also a perfect option for anyone on the go because all you need to be successful is a mat. (A bath towel will even do in a pinch!) Best ways to Avoid Back Pain During Yoga (as seen on NBC News better)

Yoga is supposed to be a method of relieving your back pain, but if done improperly it can contribute to it. 

As someone who used to suffer from lower back pain, I always knew that there had to be a way to modify yoga in order to receive better results. Even when I used to practice yoga I was left with lower back pain that was difficult to ignore. After receiving my certification to become a yoga instructor, I researched small modifications that I could do to alleviate my pain during yoga. With these five small tweaks I was able to walk out of yoga class with less lower back pain than ever before!

Yoga Workout for Traveling (as seen in the Chicago sun times)

If you’re like many of my private weight loss clients, traveling is in your job description. Whether you’re traveling for work, play, or something in between it’s important to not lose track of your fitness goals! 

When you travel you assume you’re going to wreck your fitness plans, but this isn’t always the case! In reality, you don’t even need a gym to squeeze in a workout while you’re in a hotel room. I created a workout for my column ‘Exercise Well with Stephanie Mansour’ that could be done entirely on bath towel if you’re traveling! This workout is based around the principle of keeping your body in motion for 15 minutes a day as well as getting a great night of sleep.

Many of my private weight loss clients go to the gym after a long, stressful day of work. While there isn’t a law against working while you’re stressed out, if you’re dealing with high stress levels then exercises like yoga and pilates may be more beneficial for you. You’ll be working out and also lowering your stress levels! You’ll also be balancing out your body, meaning you can go back to work less stressed than when you left.

Yoga Poses to Help You Sleep (As Seen on NBC News Better)

If you have trouble falling asleep at night, you’re not alone! Many of my private weight loss clients (and myself at times) also struggle with this. What many people don’t realize, however, is that stress is the reason they are struggling to fall asleep! 

Doing yoga before you go to bed can help you to fall asleep faster because of the way the poses can help to calm your nervous system. Dr. Kenneth Lee, Assistant Professor of Sleep Medicine and Neurology at the University of Chicago Medical Center, notes that doing yoga not only helps you to fall asleep faster but also improves the quality of sleep you’ll have. Take Advantage of the Heat in Your Yoga Practice

With the temperatures so high, it’s easy to feel lethargic and like you don’t want to do your regular practice. However, try opening up tight areas by utilizing the heat to go deeper into your postures:

– Twists are a great thing to do when it’s hot out. You’ll be able to more deeply “wring” out your internal organs and loosen up your spine. The heat makes your muscles more flexible.

– Go deeper into your forward folds. The heat will help tight low back muscles and hamstrings loosen up, so you can feel sensations you may not feel in the winter.

– Open up your chest and sides of your waist slowly, and hold the poses here a little longer to really get into the smaller muscles and origin and insertion points of the muscles.

How to Help Your Mom Work Out on Mother’s Day

Does your mom enjoy working out, or do you wish she’d spend more time at the gym for her own health? Here are some fun workout tips for Mother’s Day:

-Invite your mom to a fitness class or just take her to the gym with you. Introduce her to the equipment, help her learn new moves, or even hire a personal trainer to give her a session or two.

-Buy your mom a workout DVD and follow along with her – working out together may remind her how working out can be fun!

-Buy your mom a cute workout top, then teach her workouts she can do at home in the comfort of her living room, such as yoga poses or Pilates moves.

-Hire an in-home yoga instructor to come see your mom and give her a completely customized and personal yoga class.
